Dutchman Edwin van der Sar is one of the most titled goalkeepers of the 21st century. The athlete has eight championships at the club level and two bronze medals at the European Championships with the national team. Van der Sar is the only goalkeeper to win the Champions League twice: with Ajax in 1995 and with Manchester United in the Moscow final of 2008. I talked to the goalkeeper about the World Cup in Russia, Euro 2008 and the best goalkeepers on the planet.

“Leaving for a European club could be a new challenge for Akinfeev”

Lenta.ru: 10 years ago you were already in Moscow. How do you like the city today?

Edwin van der Sar: Moscow will forever remain in my memory, because here I won one of the main titles in my career - the Champions League. I like the city, especially now when so many fans from all over the world have come to Moscow. Russia has definitely revealed itself in a very pleasant way.

Have your impressions of Moscow changed over these 10 years?

I didn't see much when I was a player. Our route passed between the hotel and the stadium, and in our free time we just wanted to relax. Of course, now the image of your country has changed due to politics. But the 2018 World Cup improved the attitude of foreigners towards Russia.

The tournament turned out to be intense for the fans and broke the record for the number of penalties awarded. There have already been 21 penalty kicks. (The previous record was 18, dated to the 1990/1998/2002 World Cup). How does a goalkeeper prepare for a penalty?

Nowadays, different sources of training are open to goalkeepers: you can find out which corner a particular football player hits most often. If he threw 17 times to the right and only three times to the left, you will be ready to hit. However, new difficulties arose: the forwards began to shoot directly into the center. Therefore, the goalkeeper needs to train more carefully.

Does Telstar's new World Cup dream ball help goalkeepers save shots?

Yes. Adidas has put a lot of effort into making the ball goal-friendly. But football is designed to score goals. If it becomes very easy for the goalkeeper to cope with shots, then the fans will not be happy.

It is technically possible to prepare for a penalty, but how to prepare yourself emotionally? Is it important for a team to have a leader who will motivate the rest?

Still would! Emotional recharging is important for any team. The person who will say: it will be difficult, but we can handle it. Most often this role is assigned to the captain. In the case of the Russian national team - . He is an experienced goalkeeper who has been playing for Russia for a long time and knows what’s what.

Does Akinfeev have the opportunity to move to a top club? Or is it lost on him?

Akinfeev should have left Russia much earlier. Although I moved from Fulham to "" only at 34 years old. Therefore, a move to a European club could be a new challenge for Akinfeev and an opportunity to play against great players. I advise him to leave CSKA and try to gain a foothold in Europe.

I wouldn't say that. He made a first-class save in the final group stage match against South Korea. And this despite missing the season due to injury. Before the injury, Neuer was the leader of both the German national team and Bayern Munich. I hope it will soon return to its previous level.

“I didn’t expect such a result from the Russian team”

Germany failed to qualify from the group; most of the favorites also went home, failing to live up to expectations. Who was your favorite?

Before the semi-final I thought England were the most likely team to win. Although in the first match of the 1/2 finals I rooted for Belgium with all my heart. They are our neighbors, we speak the same language and many Belgian footballers play on our teams.

How surprising was the Croatian performance for you?

I thought it would be difficult for them. They spent a lot of effort on two penalty shootouts, and the match against the Russian team was especially difficult. But the emotional charge helped them. The small country, home to about four million people, beat the huge Russia and surpassed the British.

Russian football players are unknown abroad because the RFPL is practically not broadcast on television. That's why I watch your athletes only during international competitions. When I watched the friendly matches, I did not at all expect such a result from the Russian team. Apparently, the home World Cup gave the players an additional impetus to play well.

The Dutch team failed to qualify for this World Cup. What was the team missing?

Do you really think that our team has problems? Yes, we didn't make it to the World Cup. But we had a difficult group in the qualifying round: France, Sweden, which left the Italians without the World Cup. We have a lot of good young players who will be full of strength for Euro 2020, and we will break into the elite again.

What was missing from this World Cup?

Dutch fans. You go out to Red Square and meet fans from Colombia, Spain, Brazil, but there are no guys in orange uniforms. I hope that at the next international tournament I will still see my native colors.

“2008 became the year of Russian football”

For the Russian national team, the victory over Holland at Euro 2008 became one of the most significant in the country's football history. What do you think about when you remember that match?

It seems to me that that victory happened largely thanks to the coach, who worked in Holland for a long time and knew our players well. Maybe Russia was in slightly better shape. It was a shame to lose to Russia then, because for me that match was the last as part of the Dutch national team.

Were you surprised by the result of that meeting?

It didn't come as a surprise to me. If a team makes it to the European Championship, it means they know how to play football. Moreover, we had heard a lot about football players from Moscow clubs and St. Petersburg, which by that time had already won the Cup. Probably, 2008 became the year of Russian football.

Before the match, did you know at least any of the Russian football players?

Not really. Your football league gets virtually no coverage in Europe. And if we watch Russian clubs in the Champions League, we see a huge number of foreigners. The star of the team is more likely to be a Brazilian than a Russian.

Do you think it is possible to see the teams of Russia and Holland in the finals of the European Championship 2020?

Anything can happen in football. But if this happens, then Holland will definitely win.

Edwin van der Sar is one of the most popular football players, a legend of European football and the Dutch national team. Born on October 29, 1970, this player is truly one of the most outstanding goalkeepers in the world. In 2011, at the age of 41, he ended his club career. This football player has a very rich and exciting biography, and it is definitely worth telling about it.

Carier start

Van der Sar began playing in clubs in his hometown. In these teams he was noticed by Louis van Gaal, as a result of which he was invited to Ajax. Naturally, the young goalkeeper at that time agreed to this lucrative offer. So he became one of the most valuable players in the second team. With the Dutch team he won three national cups and four championships, as well as the UEFA Cup in 1992. And also the most important club tournament. That is, the Champions League (in 1995). Then he was recognized as the best goalkeeper in all of Europe. Van der Sar also broke the Champions League clean sheet record. The footballer played 226 matches for the Dutch Ajax and even scored one goal from the penalty spot. In general, these nine years turned out to be quite fruitful. But this, as it turned out, was just the beginning.

Career at Juventus and Fulham

In 1999, van der Sar accepted another lucrative offer - this time from Juventus in Turin. As part of this club, he entered the field 66 times. But then, as you might guess, his place was taken by the great Gianluigi Buffon, who to this day defends the honor of the “old lady”. Interestingly, goalkeeper van der Sar became the first goalkeeper of non-Italian origin in the history of the Turin team.

Then he was invited to Fulham. The Dutchman did not agree with the role of a reserve goalkeeper for Juventus, so he decided to move to England. They paid for it an amount of approximately 7,100,000 euros. The Dutchman played 154 matches for his new team. Four years in total. After which another important career stage began in his life.

"Manchester United"

The Red Devils bought the goalkeeper for an undisclosed sum. But the British were pleased with the acquisition. Sar, whose biography is truly impressive, was named the team's best goalkeeper. This is what Sir Alex Ferguson, the head coach, said himself. And Edwin lived up to expectations. For example, one of the most striking and memorable matches was the game against Manchester City. Then Edwin managed to keep the goal absolutely dry. That game ended in United's favor, only with a minimum score of 1:0. At the end of that season, van der Sar was included in the PFA Team of the Year. And a couple of months later he was recognized as the hero of the match. It was a game taking place as part of the English Super Cup, and Manchester United won it - not without the help of the goalkeeper. Edwin saved three direct shots from London players, all from the penalty spot.

There is one factor that helped a goalkeeper like van der Sar make excellent shots. Growth is what it's all about. It is only 3 centimeters short of two meters. Tall, agile, instantly responsive, attentive - these qualities helped Edwin become a truly outstanding goalkeeper.

National team career

This goalkeeper was included in the Dutch national team at the 1994 World Cup as a reserve (Ed de Goey was the main one at that time), but for the first time in this composition he entered the field only a year later. And from that moment on, Edwin was the team’s number one at all subsequent championships, both European and world.

At the European Championships, held in 2000, he did not miss a single goal. Only when he was replaced by Sander Westerfeld did the team receive a goal from their opponents. In general, the total “dry” episode, designed by the great Dutchman, is 594 minutes. And this is a record for all European Championships. In 2006, he broke another figure. At that World Cup, he left behind Frank de Boer's record for the number of games for the national team.

True, in 2008 he said that after the European Championship he would immediately hang up his gloves. And so it happened. True, when the main goalkeeper of the national team was injured in the 2010 World Cup qualifying, he was called up to the team. Edwin could not refuse and entered the field twice without missing a single goal.

It is worth noting that Edwin played in a modern manner. He often went beyond the goal (I immediately remember the best goalkeeper of our time - Manuel Neuer) and loved to play as the last defender. It's hard not to admit that he played great with his feet.

Van der Sar has a wife, Annemarie van Kesteren, whom he married in 2006, and two children, daughter Lynne and son Joey.

He also has an incredibly huge number of achievements that are impossible to list all of them. 14 trophies with Ajax, Intertoto Cup with Juventus and a second with Fulham, 11 titles with Manchester United, fourth place at the 1998 World Cup and bronze at the 2000 and 2004 European Championships. And these are just team achievements. “Golden Glove”, a special PFA award for services to football, seven-time winner of the best goalkeeper status and, finally, the oldest player in the Champions League final in history. Van der Sar is a truly great footballer. And this has been proven.

Disagreements with the aristocracy over the pay of masons led Edwin to found a criminal organization called Defias Brotherhood. Van Cleef was considered one of the most dangerous threats to the kingdom until the heroes of the Alliance killed him in the depths Dead Mines.

Becoming

Edwin has been his best friend since childhood Mathias Shaw, and he taught him the art of shadows, hoping that one day they would work together.

Over time, Edwin was elected head of the guild of masons - the best builders among people. They were unsurpassed creators, and their taste and flair were forever preserved in the beautiful buildings erected by the guild. Masons worked for many years to rebuild Stormwind after the First War. Edwin also led the construction of the Netherguard Fortress, which was supposed to patrol the Dark Portal.

When the restoration of Stormwind ended, the aristocrats under the influence of the ladies Katrany Prestor, refused to pay enough gold for the work, claiming that the masons were demanding too much. Although the guild received some payment for the years of work, the masons felt they deserved much more. Edwin openly demanded compensation, and in response, the aristocrats ordered the dissolution of the guild.

This demand angered Van Cleef, and he led a large-scale riot on the streets of Stormwind. The uprising was chaotic and had consequences: the queen was killed in the confusion Tiffin Rinn, wife Variana. Edwin fled the capital along with his loyal masons and announced the creation of the Brotherhood of Defias. During the uprising, Edwin's most trusted assistant, Basil Tredd, was detained and thrown into the city prison. While awaiting trial and investigation, Tredd was practically forgotten.

Defias Brotherhood

Edwin knew about insecurity Western Region and used his superior strength to drive many farmers from their lands and seize several gold mines. Van Cleef had resources at his disposal, and he used them to draw up a plan with which he could take revenge on the Stormwind government.

The leader of the Brotherhood taught his people the thieving skills he had learned in the capital, and helped them adapt to the new life of criminals who attacked travelers. When the Stormwind City Guard began fighting the Brotherhood, the outlaws armed themselves with instruments and weapons provided by Van Cleef and his mechanics.

Edwin's tactics became increasingly ruthless: the Brotherhood robbed merchants who brought goods into the city and continued to seize farmland that provided food for the inhabitants of Stormwind. Van Cleef received more and more money and used it to bribe mercenary troops. Some of the Brotherhood were captured, but Edwin was able to play in his own interests here too - an uprising was organized in the prison.

Dead Mines

Source of information in this section – World of Warcraft Classic.

Edwin's secret hideout became Dead Mines, located beneath the Westfall Mountains. He is on board a ship in a vast grotto and was waiting for the right moment to finally deal with his enemies - the Stormwind nobility. However, a traitor also appeared among the Brotherhood, who agreed to cooperate with government officials. He led a squad of heroes through a secret passage into the Brotherhood's hideout, and the massacre began.

The heroes were able to make their way to the ship on which Van Cleef was hiding, and defeated his closest associates. Vanessa, Edwin's daughter, hid in a secluded place and watched as the heroes destroyed her father and cut off his head as proof of their victory. The head was delivered to Grian Stonemane, who declared that this event meant the collapse of the Defias Brotherhood.

Heritage

It turned out that among the aristocrats there were conspirators who agreed to cooperate with the Brotherhood to destroy King Varian. Agents CV joint They managed to find out about this in time and dealt with the conspirators. The king was informed of what had happened, and he thanked the heroes for foiling the Brotherhood's plans and killing Van Cleiff.

Later Jaina Proudmoore, whose people encountered Brotherhood criminals on the shores of the Dustwallow Marsh, discovered that the Brotherhood took part in the kidnapping of Varian, planned by Katrana Prestor.

Five years after my father's death Vanessa van Cleef grew up enough to start reviving the Brotherhood.
